Ben Loyall of Widomaker
Communications called the meeting to order and welcomed all attendees.
He also stressed that Widomaker's role in the Williamsburg Internet Association
(WIA) was to assist the group but in no way to influence or advertise within
the group.
The bylaws, which were modeled after the Hampton
Roads Internet Association's bylaws, were approved with the following
changes:
Article III
Michael Dowden spoke on how the HRIA has utilized its membership fees. Because
of the relatively low cost of doing correspondence through the Internet,
the money has been mostly available to use to pay for speaker fees. Discussion
was held on whether the annual $10 fee should be per person or family, and
how the votes would be distributed between the family.
A motion was made to amend the bylaws as follows:
An annual family membership shall cost $10 and entitle the family to one
vote.
The motion passed with 22 yes and 3 no votes.
Article VI
Discussion was held on what officer positions should compose the Executive
Board. In order to fairly distribute the work load and keep the number of
Board members at an odd number, a motion was made that the following positions
be established:
President - presides at meetings
Vice President - presides in the absence of the president
Corresponding Secretary - sends meeting announcements and other public
correspondence
Recording Secretary - maintains official records, to include meeting
minutes
Treasurer - maintains Association funds.
The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
The bylaws as amended were passed unanimously.
John Caywood, president
of the Atlantic Coast Internet Consultants,
spoke on "E-mail Errors and How To Avoid Them" and on "Finding
People's E-mail Addresses." Further information, including Mr.
Caywood's notes for this presentation, can be found at http://www.acic.com/reference,
or by e-mailing the speaker at caywood@acic.com
The following members were nominated to serve on the new Executive Board. All were approved unanimously by the Association.
The new board was presented to the Association.
The next meeting will be held on the third Thursday of July at the
Williamsburg Regional Library at 7:00 pm. It was suggested that the meeting
date be changed, so that it does not conflict with the Hampton Roads Internet
Association meetings. Michael Dowden suggested that another weekday during
the third week, such as the Tuesday or Wednesday, might work best, so that
speakers could be 'shared' between the Hampton Roads and the Williamsburg
Association. The possibility of changing the meeting date will be discussed
in-depth at the July meeting.
Suggestions were made on how to advertise future meetings of the Williamsburg
Internet Association. It was suggested that the group announce its meetings
through the Virginia Gazette and the Daily Press, as well
as to the Christopher Wren Association, the students of the College of W&M,
and through the local computer stores. Patrick Golden of the Williamsburg
Library added that the meetings were also being announced in the library's
newsletter.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned.
